Villa in Puerto Portals – Timeless Design and Mediterranean Living on Mallorca
Interview with TH‑A Architects and Edith Minkner

EM: We have already had several of your single-family houses in our portfolio, and now we are entrusted with a very special property: a villa above Puerto Portals, set on more than 3,000 m² of land, with spectacular views. What was the guiding concept behind this project?

AT: Plots on steep slopes often promise an extraordinary quality of life and spectacular views, but they are always challenging to plan and build. In this case, we succeeded in arranging the entire residence on an 80-metre plateau that blends seamlessly into the terrain, despite a height difference of around 20 metres across the site. The result is a striking sense of generosity and sweeping vistas over the Bay of Palma

LH Right from the start, we placed great emphasis on the entrance as a mediator between exterior and interior, linking both levels of the home. Beyond it, carefully composed sightlines open towards the bay. To enhance the generosity of the flowing interiors, we introduced daylight even on the slope side, ensuring that secondary spaces also enjoy natural light. Expansive roof overhangs provide shade, while wide porches extend the living areas out onto the terraces. The architecture follows the natural topography — sculptural in character, restrained yet defined by clear accents.

EM: This house really does leave nothing to be desired: a 25-metre infinity pool with whirlpool and sweeping views across the bay, generous suites with elegant bathrooms and dressing rooms, a home cinema, spa, gym and state-of-the-art technology. How do you approach a project with such an ambitious scope

AT: We always begin with a vision of the atmosphere, the focal points and the emotions we want to create. And we think in sequences: beyond the spatial arrangement it is about the ‘fourth dimension’. We often compare it to writing a film script – except that we are preparing many scenes at once, from glamorous occasions with guests to very personal moments. The concept has to accommodate a wide range of uses. Our task is to give this structure built form: with fluid transitions, intelligent connections between levels and changing perspectives.

EM: It has truly become a residence where one can enjoy the Mallorcan lifestyle to the full.

LH: Our aim was to create an environment tailored to the highest expectations. We are not only looking for the perfect use of the site, but also for the intangible qualities of the place – the genius loci.

AT: The design combines a timeless architectural language with Mallorcan elements, formal clarity with warm, refined materials, modern technologies with traditional craftsmanship. The result is a series of spaces that are not only architecturally distinctive, but also convey an atmosphere of timeless design and Mediterranean living – a place made to be enjoyed.
